Senate Decides PIRC Funding Thursday

Call Senate Appropriators Today! Help Increase Funding for Parental Involvement

This Thursday, July 30, the Senate Appropriations Committee is expected to finalize its Fiscal Year (FY) 2010 funding bill for important programs housed under the departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education.  Now is the time to ask Senate Appropriators to increase funding for Parental Information and Resource Centers (PIRCs). Last week, the House voted to provide level funding for PIRCs at $39.25 million. This is far short of the $86 million PIRCs need annually to effectively provide statewide leadership, capacity-building, technical assistance, training and support in the implementation of parent involvement programs, policies, and activities that support student achievement.

PIRC funding is currently the only source of federal funding intended exclusively to help schools and communities meet the parental involvement requirements mandated in the Elementary and Secondary Education Act – No Child Left Behind (ESEA-NCLB). PIRCs provide parents, organizations, schools, districts, and state educational agencies with comprehensive training, information, and support for parent involvement from early childhood through adolescence. State PIRCs and PTAs have also leveraged their resources and capacity to increase statewide family engagement efforts through training parent liaisons, participating and leading education summits, and working with state and local education agencies to support parental involvement in schools.

If your Senator(s) currently sits on the Appropriations Committee, call TODAY and ask your Senator(s) to increase PIRC funding to $86 million within the FY 2010 appropriations bill.

Lovinggood PTSA eNews!

Dear Lovinggood parents and students,

I'm writing to share with the Lovinggood community that the Cobb Board approved a recommendation by Human Resources to appoint me to the principalship at Pebblebrook High School.  While this was unexpected, I understand fully that changes are made based on the District's needs.  I've enjoyed my three years at Lovinggood, and I feel that we (the faculty and I) created a school environment where students could excel and prosper.  I was looking forward to the upcoming school year, but my attention must now turn to Pebblebrook High School.

I want to thank the parents of Lovinggood for their support of our efforts, and for always making sure that your children were prepared for school.  I would like to especially thank the PTSA and the many parent volunteers for helping whenever it was needed.

A personal note to Lovinggood's students: I extend warm wishes for a successful 2009-2010 school year.  I will certainly miss you.  When you arrive at school this year, you will see a nice mural that was painted courtesy of the PTSA and FCA.  When you look at it, I don't want you to just think of the geography or history of the places depicted.  I want you to consider a deeper message that you, too, are "wonders of the world."  Have a great school year.

The new principal is Ms. Elizabeth Wilson, an assistant principal who has worked at Lost Mountain and Smitha Middle Schools.  She is excited and will begin right away.

Again, thank you all for three wonderful years.
Zinta Perkins

OM Teams on to State!

LMS has three Odyssey of the Mind Teams.  While the number of teams is extremely unusual (most schools only have one and many schools aren't represented at all), it is more unusual for all three teams to win the regional level and advance to state-wide competition!  All three of our teams will be going to Columbus State University on April 18 and 19 to compete. OM is a  program that "supports quality and integrity in education, and at the same time contributes to the development of a society of creative problem solvers." More info: www.georgiaodyssey.org
