Thanks for your support on behalf of your children!
The following letter was sent to Governor Perdue asking him to veto three bills that we believe will negatively impact children and public education. Add your voice by calling his office (404) 656-1776 and urging him to veto these bills. The call takes only a minute but could make a big difference in the lives of the children of Georgia. Share this information with your membership and urge them to call too.
April 17, 2008
Dear Governor Perdue,
On behalf of Georgia PTA and its over 318,000 members, I am asking you to VETO three bills that will have a negative impact on children and public education: HB 89, HB 1133 and HB 881.
HB 89will result in more guns in environments where children are normally present: in restaurants, on public transportation and in public parks. This will place our children in close proximity to guns being held by individuals who are not law enforcement officers and who may not have had any training to use them, who may be under the influence of alcohol and who may be careless and thus provide an opportunity for children to have access to guns. It is very disconcerting to parents to think that while their children are with them riding MARTA, eating at a restaurant or playing in a park, the person next to them could be in possession of a concealed gun. We believe a line can and should be drawn when it comes to children and access to guns.</ p>
HB 1133needlessly drains money from the state coffers by allowing a tax credit for making a donation to private schools. Companies and individuals have historically made donations to provide scholarships to schools and have used the existing tax deductions to do so. This is not the time to pull more money out of the State economy just to provide up to $50 million in tax credits for private institutions, especially when the State government hasn't been able to afford to fully fund the education QBE formula since 2003.
HB 881unconstitutionally takes local tax dollars out of the hands of local boards of education and places the money under the control of state commissioned charter schools. The State has a process by which a charter school can be established and it appears to be working well. Adding another authorizing agency who has additional authority and who can raid local dollars undermines both the existing State process and the local boards of education.
Please give these highly contested bills additional consideration. Each passed by a very narrow margin which indicates mixed support at best. We hope that when you do, you will recognize the negative impact they will have on our children and the education system of Georgia and VETO them.

As you may know, Lovinggood plans to participate in International TV-Turnoff Week together with thousands of other schools and communities around the world. The purpose is to take a healthy break from TV and re-focus on activities that are more academically, socially and physically rewarding.
We encourage your whole family to participate in this event by leaving your television sets off for at least 30 minutes each night for the entire week of April 21-25, 2008.
The success of the previous International TV-Turnoff Weeks (more than four million people and 25,000 schools have participated) demonstrates that a solid one-week recess from television allows people more time to talk, read, volunteer, exercise, play, create and participate in their community. Some of our goals for TV-Turnoff Week are to get families moving in order to promote long term physical activity, to inspire those creative juices and get them flowing again and to be able to spend quality time with our families. It is also about having more fun.
As part of this TV-Turnoff event, we are asking our students, teachers and parents to pledge to TURN-OFF THE TV! Students who complete either a walking log or activity log will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win one of two bikes. There will be other prizes throughout the month as well, including an I-Tunes Gift Card and an AMC Movie pass, just to name a few. We challenge you and your family to join us in this week-long celebration!
Listed below are some fun ideas to GET MOVING and HAVE FUN!
Monday – Nature Scavenger Hunt
Tuesday – Play Frisbee and have a Picnic
Wednesday - Family Game Night
Thursday – Retro Fun Night (Hopscotch, 4 Squares, Red Rover, Tag, Hide –n-Seek)
Friday – Walk a Pet (Yours or your friends or neighbors)

GOOD LUCK TO OUR OM TEAMS!!
Let's Give a BIG "Good luck Send off" to all three of Lovinggood's Odyssey of the Mind teams! They are leaving for the state-wide competition this Friday and Saturday at Columbus College. Each of these teams have put in countless hours to win at the district competition and to be able to advance to the state competition.
LMS OM Teams beat the odds:
Out of the 23 middle schools in Cobb county- only 3 schools have an OM team.
Of those three schools- only ONE school has three teams - that's Lovinggood!
Most amazing of all... we are the only middle school with THREE winning teams headed to the state level competition! This is HUGE!
Go Odyssey of the Mind- Lovinggood is so proud of you!

May 5-9 Teacher Appreciation Week
Take time this week to thank a teacher! Don’t limit it to current teachers – look back and remember to thank a teacher you‘ve had in the past that made a difference in your life. While teachers always appreciate gifts, most will agree that a note of thanks ranks high to the list of what they would like. Also, encourage your children to show random acts of kindness to teachers this week. If you are looking for something special, consider making a donation to the Lovinggood Relay for Life Team in honor of one or more of your teachers. For information on how to make a donation to the Lovinggood team, visit www.cobbrelay.org. Under “Donate” click on “Donate to a Participant”. Then enter James McPherson. Then click on his name or Lovinggood Middle School and you’ll be taken to a page where you can join the team, make a donation or light a luminary in someone’s honor or memory. What a great way to honor a teacher or a group of teachers!

Also, during the week, we will host our final Principal meeting – this time with dessert in the afternoon or early evening.. Come share your thoughts about this year – what you’ve like and maybe didn’t like. It’s a great way to be involved in shaping our school.
