How much of children's time is spent outside the classroom?

In Georgia, 80% of children's time is spent outside the classroom.  In most families, parents' and children's schedules don't mesh.  Children are alone as much as 20 - 25 hours a week.

Georgia PTA is working with the Georgia Afterschool Investment Council to study parent perceptions of afterschool activities across the state.  The survey seeks to measure their perceived quantity and quality of choices available to today's youth during the hours immediately after school  and before many adults get home.  This project is funded by a grant awarded by The Mott Foundation through National PTA and is currently underway.

In conjunction with this effort, this survey targets the impressions of those same activities among children in grades 5 and above.  We would very much like your assistance.  If you have children in this age range, please ask them to take our brief survey.  The survey is anonymous and in no way will be tied back to your child's response.   If you have more than one child in this age category, feel free to have each complete the survey separately.  We want to hear from the perspective of the student as we move forward in our advocacy work in support of quality afterschool programs.

It is important to find out what students are thinking across the state.  There is no "one size fits all" approach to providing quality after school programs.  Georgia PTA is asking all District Directors and Middle School PTA/PTSA Presidents to pass along this survey request to students in your area.  The link can be typed directly into a web browser and will take kids only a few minutes to complete.  We hope to compare the children's perspective with those offered by adults to identify gaps in after school programming needs and assessments in performance.
