CDC:  Fewer Schools Sell Candy, Soda to Students

By Mike Stobbe, AP Medical Writer

"Efforts to improve the school nutrition environment are working and Mississippi and Tennessee are excellent examples of this progress," Howell Wechsler, director of CDC's Division of Adolescent and School Health, said in a statement.

American Heart Association officials celebrated the progress, attributing it to aggressive legislation and school policy changes in some states that they hope will get children and teens accustomed to healthier eating.

"What kids do in school in large measure dictates what they do away from school," said Dr. Clyde Yancy, the association's president.

Exercise and ADD: An Expert Interview With John J. Ratey, MD
Pippa Wysong

Medscape Editor's Note:
Attention-deficit disorder (ADD), also called attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), is often surrounded by controversy over medication use and is perceived by many as a condition that is overtreated. John J. Ratey, MD, advocates that exercise should be included in the treatment regimen, and that exercise can even reduce or eliminate the need for medication. An Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, Cambridge, Massachusetts, Dr. Ratey is author of the book Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain, as well as several related books in the popular press. He also has consulted on clinical studies pertaining to exercise and psychiatric conditions.

View Article  Lovinggood MS PTSA eNews - Information from South Council re: Flood relief

Lovinggood PTSA eNews!

Flood Victim and Volunteer Resource Information

Updated Flood Victim Help
A major turning point occurred that is most beneficial to our SW Cobb Families.  C.A.M.P Ministries will now be the central location for them to turn to for all their needs-food, housing and clothing assistance, etc.  If you are not familiar with C.A.M.P here is the website http://www.svcamp.org/.  They help families from the Austell, Lithia Springs,Clarkdale, Mableton and Powder Springs areas.  They also extend clothing and food assistance to some locations of Paulding and Douglas Counties.  Cobb Families that are in need outside of these areas are encouraged to seek help from MUST Ministries. Darlene Duke, CAMP's director hosted the President's Brunch this year for South Cobb Council. She is a tremendous advocate for people in need. What a great partner she is to PTA.

Food and Clothes Donations
C.A.M.P. and MUST Ministries need donations. CAMP needs clothing, food and gift card donations and M.U.S.T. Ministries needs food items. They asked for the following items to be donated: bags of rice, canned beans (kidney beans), canned meats like chicken breast, tuna, canned ham, pasta, hearty cans of soup, spaghetti stuff - things that can be on the pantry shelf for awhile.  Also, toiletries are helpful.

Volunteer Needs
There was also a call for volunteers, not just in the short-term but, also for the long haul.  One should note that it may take upwards of 2 years for life to return to normal. If their are individuals who would like to volunteer they can contact Jenaila Hawkins @
jhawkins@mustministries.org. She will place people in a database for volunteer needs.  They will need to specify what location they would like to volunteer at.  Volunteer needs are: Construction Assistance and Muddling, Volunteer Coordination, Sorters, Office Assistant and Case Management, Individuals to collect door-to-door information to track flood victims.

FEMA Registration
All victims have been asked to register with FEMA, so please pass the message along. The Cobb Location is the Threadmill Blg @ 5000 Austell Powder Springs Road (8am-7pm).  Douglas County is the Lithia Springs 1st United Methodist @ 3711 Temple Street, Lithia Springs, Ga (8am-7pm).  Paulding County is the Paulding County Community Center @ 54 North Industrial Way, Dallas, Ga (8am-7pm).

At the Threadmill Complex, there is also a list of approved and legitimate vendors to help the flood victims.  They have been researched and are receiving police passes to do work in the community.  This is a wonderful tool for the survivors of this flood to be assured that who will help them will be of a true spirit.

Furniture Donations
Take all furniture donations to the Atlanta Furniture Bank.

Legal Aid Help
Call and state that they are a Flood Victim. Victims can call for any issues like rental contracts, mortgage payments, etc. 770-528-2565.
Traveler's Aid

Has help for rental assistance.  Also, they have monies to help families to be unified with other family members out of state, if they want to leave the SW Cobb Area. (Of course we do not want that to happen). 770-428-1883.

Here is some interesting facts so far just to give you a scope of what is occurring:
FEMA registrations as of 9-30-09: 12,419
Approved Eligible Housing Program Assistance: $16,242,972.14
Red Cross has served 18,000 meals and 13,000 snacks to families so far.

Parents, here is a tip from the Lovinggood School Council.
If you wish to communicate via email with your child's teacher, please note the following to ensure your message gets through and doesn't go unrecognized in the spam filter.
In email messages to teachers and administrators, please note your child's name in the SUBJECT LINE. Here is an example of how to do this: "Message from Jane Smith's Parents."
This way, teachers will be able to easily recognize parent emails from unwanted spam emails, and can respond to you. With so many students out sick this season it's especially important to follow this tip and aid effective communication.
Thank you.

2009-2010 Reflection entries due 10-16-09

National PTA believes all children deserve a quality arts education and encourages students to pursue artistic expression through participation in its annual arts Reflections Program. The program offers students the opportunity to create works of art for fun and recognition. Students are encouraged to create and submit works of art in one or more of six areas:
  • literature
  • musical composition
  • photography
  • visual arts (which includes art forms such as drawing, painting, print making, and collage)
  • dance choreography
  • film/video production

In its more than 30-year history, the program has encouraged millions of students across the nation and in American schools overseas to create works of art.

SPIRIT DAY AT LMS IS OCTOBER 16!

Hawks spirit wear and hats are approved and encouraged!
(Dress code still applies to clothing)

We are having a HUGE “Kick Off” Rally
to promote healthy eating and exercising for LMS students.

We have been offered a unique opportunity to partner with the South East Dairy Association and the NFL in a program entitled,
“FUEL UP TO PLAY!”

What is Fuel Up to Play? It’s a new youth program sponsored by National Dairy Council and the National Football League designed to empower students to take action for their health and improve their school environment. And the best part? YOU can help make a difference. All you have to do is eat healthy, play at least 60 minutes a day and participate in fun activities in and out of school. You know, good things.

This kick off is designed to inspire LMS students to pursue a healthy lifestyle!
There will be ongoing activities to keep this plan to the fore front.
