Honor Roll donations needed!
  
Attention all parents of students that either just made the A Honor Roll or AB Honor Roll:
We will be having a field day in celebration of these students' good work. We need donations of water bottles, 6 pk, 12pk or 24 pk and cups and gatorade mixes for large coolers. They can be sent in now until Thursday, April 2 and put into PTSA office.

This super FUN class focuses on answering the questions we get asked in our stores nearly every day.  If you’re intimidated by your computer or feel like a computer idiot you've got to come. It’s not hard, boring, or over-your-head technical; it’s just hands-on computer learning made fun for men and women of all ages.  “Whack-a-Computer” available to attendees only.

 
Linda Pereirais the owner of That Computer Chick.  Linda grew up in the Silicon Valley ( San Jose , CA ) and began using computers in 1978.  She owned a computer business in California for 15 years, and after moving to Georgia she started That Computer Chick, LLC in 2003.  To help meet the demands of customers the Due West store was opened in 2005, and the Shallowford store was opened in 2006.  She is married, has 3 children, and does not spend her free time on the computer.
 
Childhood Obesity and How Parents Can Help

Children are faced with many factors that affect their health and wellness.  This presentation will help parents and caregivers to create a better environment for keeping their children healthy.  A group activity will follow.  

Geralda McQueenWellness Coach and Group Exercise Instructor.  She has been with the East Cobb YMCA for over a year. Geralda holds a Bachelors degree in Exercise and Health Sciences from Kennesaw State University . She holds a nationally accredited Personal Trainer certification from AFPA and numerous certifications from the YMCA of the USA including Foundations of Strength & Conditioning, Foundations of Group Exercise and Cycling Instructor.  

GA College 411 

Mr. Wilkinson will be speaking on GAcollege411, a website that helps you plan, apply and pay for educations.   He will cover career information, student planners, Georgia colleges, transcripts, applications and paying for college.  He will also speak about the HOPE grant, scholarship and requirements.  

Hal J. Wilkinson  Regional representative for Georgia Student Finance Commission.  He has worked in college admissions as a recruiter and served as International Student Advisor for Truett McDonnell College and Gordon College .

Raising Socially Responsible Children in a "Me Generation"

Puberty – Reviewing the Basics 

This workshop offers parents a refresher course in reproductive anatomy and physiology and tips for talking to their children about the exciting and sometimes confusing changes that occur during puberty.

Dating: So What Can I Do?

This workshop encourages parents to explore their beliefs about dating behaviors at a variety of ages and offers strategies for sharing family expectations with their adolescents.  

The two presentations above will be presented one time only, and the following two speakers will present:  

Agnes F. Brown  Agnes Fields Brown has served as an educator and trainer in the field of adolescent health and sexuality for over eighteen years, receiving national recognition for both her innovative programs and her work in teen pregnancy prevention.   She has shared air time with Dr. Ruth Westheimer, contributed to the 1996 SEICUS publication “Now What Do I Do?” and appeared on numerous radio and television stations, including TBS’ Between the Lines and CNN’s Health Watch.  

Since 1999 she has focused her efforts on health an sexuality education for adolescent males, which lead to the co-authoring of Wising Up, a communication curriculum for parents and sons on health and sexuality issues.  

Kia L. Toodle  Ms. Toodle has been in the field of adolescent health and sexuality for over fourteen years, specializing in training and group facilitation.  She was featured in Newsweek Magazine for her work with the “Teen to Teen” peer education program.  She has extensive experience in program planning and curriculum development and is co-author of Wising Up, a communication curriculum for parents and sons on health and sexuality issues.  Kia has implemented numerous programs in schools and in community and faith based organizations.  She provides informal counseling to parents and youth an is a certified HIV Counselor with the State of Georgia  

The Street Test for Parents 

A conversation about Kid's Today-Based on Jeff’s book, Turn Up The Music, this workshop will explore issues facing kids today using  a short street test.   Topics discussed will include music and culture, self-injury, bullying behavior, internet use, drug use and other issues that relate to young people.  Strategies around what can be done to prevent these behaviors will be discussed.  No PowerPoint will be used during this workshop! Disclaimer-Some of the conversation presented may be offensive to some people.

Youth Culture 

The Anti-drug Campaign, “The Parent Chronicles” educates parents regarding youth pop culture and teen high risk behavior.  Parents will be quizzed on MySpace, the Choking Game and various drug terminologies to help them better understand what kids are into these days.

Child Passenger Safety

Did you know that motor vehicle crashes is the leading cause of injury-related death for children ages 14 and younger?  This informational session will discuss the importance of seat belt use for children and the types of child restraint systems used.  The seat belt law in Georgia will be discussed, and you will learn how to keep your child safe while riding in a car.  

Amanda Walpole, CHES, MPHis a current employee of Cobb & Douglas Public Health as the District Director for Injury Prevention.  Amanda has held positions with the agency over the past ten years in Health Services, Health Assessment and Health Promotion.  She is a graduate of Georgia Southern University where she received an undergraduate BS degree in Community Health.  She then completed her MPH degree through Walden University .  Amanda also holds a certification for Health Education Specialist since 1998.  

Safe Neighborhoods/Safe Homes

Forty-nine percent of Cobb’s 10th graders say their friends use alcohol at home or at a friend’s house!  Cobb Safe Neighborhoods/Safe Homes is designed to make alcohol harder for teens to get by mobilizing adults who are in the best position to help.  A grassroots neighbor-to neighbor campaign, Cobb Safe Neighborhoods/

Safe Homes get neighborhoods residents, civic and community organization, school PTAs or PTSAs working together with law enforcement partners to prevent underage drinking and youth access to alcohol and other drug; keeping Cobb’s kids, families, and neighborhoods safe. This approach will increase community awareness of unsafe underage drinking and adult social host liability.  You can help make it work!   

Pat Giuliani has been a Marietta resident for 27 years.  A mother of four daughters she has held numerous volunteer positions on local, council and state PTAs. Pat has also held position on civic and faith based organizations from Girl Scouts to Walton Fastpitch Booster Club officer.   She currently serves on the GA PTA state board and the ECCC PTA board as the Youth Service chair.  At her local school she serves as the Parental Involvement chair and generates a monthly electronic newsletter to parents educating them on the affects drugs, alcohol and tobacco has on the adolescent brain.  Pat has been a member of the Cobb Alcohol Taskforce (formerly called Cobb Underage Drinking Taskforce) for five years.  She is currently the coordinator of the Cobb Safe Neighborhoods/Safe Homes Campaign and is employed by the Council on Alcohol and Drugs and Cobb Community Collaborative.
