Honor Roll Celebrations
February 19, 2010
 Students who achieve Honor Roll status are recognized after each grading period with a celebration. These students will be rewarded with popcorn and a movie to celebrate their hard work.
 Volunteers and donations of bottled water are needed to make these events possible. Water can be brought to homerooms or dropped off in the PTSA office. (Please put grade if delivering to PTSA office)
Please contact the appropriate grade level coordinator if you are able to help:
C.A.M.P. provided much needed aid and support during the September floods to our neighbors in south Cobb. In the same spirit as M.U.ST., they are helping those in need year round. Please consider helping

Get your taxes prepared for free from VITA!
VITA, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, is a free tax preparation service. Oakwood Open High School here in Cobb County hosts the only high school VITA center in Georgia and is operated by students and staff. 2010 will represent the eighth year of operations. During the previous seven years, the tax center has prepared over 1200 returns, yielding refunds in excess of $800,000 and saving tax filiers thousands in preparation fees.
Oakwood's VITA center is operated in conjunction with the Internal Revenue Service and the Atlanta Proserity Campaign. It's operations have been funded by grants from Cobb Schools Foundation and Walton Communities Apartment Homes, LLC.

Lovinggood Middle School Parents,
From time to time our children make poor choices in their lives. It is incumbent on the adults that work with children to function daily with their eyes wide open. Last week one of our own students made a poor choice and brought an illegal substance to school. Due to an observant administrative staff and a school of honest and honorable students, the substance was reported and retrieved before lunch was over.
Parents need to know that the first line of defense to keep Lovinggood Middle School drug free is well educated students that have supportive parents. It is a pleasure to work with students that take responsibility for their school and want the best for their fellow students.

Hey, Hey, it’s FCA!
We wanted to report on the total collected for the FCA Haiti Relief.
This was the last day for FCA to collect donations for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. The total amount collected from the students and parents was an amazing $446.22! This will go SUCH a long way in helping those who are in such desperate need! We want to thank everyone for their awesome generosity!

Statement of the Cobb County School District regarding Gov. Perdue’s proposed budget
We are currently reviewing Gov. Perdue’s proposed budget announced Friday and its call for an additional 3 percent cut in K-12 funding this budget year. The proposal includes the requirement that all state employees, including teachers, take three furlough days before June 30, 2010. The Governor’s proposed budget will be considered by the Legislature and likely will undergo multiple revisions before it reaches final approval. Nevertheless, these recommendations provide a clear picture of the budget crisis that is impacting our state and public education. Approximately 50 percent of the Cobb County School District’s revenue comes from state funding. These proposed cuts will come on top of $77 million that has already been cut from the current Cobb County School District budget. These cuts eliminated instructional programs, lowered employee salaries 2 percent, and reduced the district’s reserve fund by $10 million.
Once the state budget is approved, and as the school district begins its own Fiscal Year 2011 budget development, all options to address the continued decline in state funding will be considered. The Cobb County School District does maintain one advantage regarding additional furlough days. Most Cobb teachers would have been required to make up three missed days as a result of school being closed in September 2009 due to flooding, and for the Jan. 8, 2010 snow day. If the state furlough is approved, most Cobb teachers would no longer be required to make up those three missed days.
The school district will continue to keep staff and the public informed as state and local budget development proceeds.

Hey, Hey, it’s FCA!
We’d like to encourage all of our middle school families to consider attending the movie “To Save A Life” on January 22nd. It deals with teenage suicide and shows how one student CAN make a difference and bring about changes in their school. This is a movie about reality. It isn’t watered down. You’ll be exposed to what really happens in the lives of teenagers across our country. You may be shocked by what you see and think it isn’t happening in our community. I promise you, it is. The writers for this film said they make no apologies for the content because they are tired of burying students. They are trying to reach the students on their level. We invite you to read the movie reviews and make the choice for yourself. We also encourage you to see this movie with your student and allow it to open up conversations between you. Teens across the country are talking about the impact this movie has made on their lives. If it saves “just one” it will be worth it.
