it’s almost time for...

FCA!

It is hard to believe that it is time to kick off another school year, but August 11^th will be here before we know it. We are already beginning to make plans for another awesome year of FCA at Lovinggood.

There will be some changes this year in FCA due to a Cobb County administrative rule. We’d like the opportunity to explain the changes to you and share with you how you can help make FCA great this year. We have lots of opportunities for parent volunteers that are only a once a month commitment.

We’d like to invite you to a parent meeting the at will be held at Lovinggood Middle School on Thursday, August 7^th at 4:30 p.m. Please make plans to attend and help us make FCA at Lovinggood great.

We are scheduling fall shifts now for staffing the store, where we sell school supplies and spirit wear every school day. A shift lasts just 45 minutes, 8:45 a.m. - 9:30 a.m., and you can choose which day you work and how often - weekly, biweekly, or monthly.

Board Approves SPLOST III Resolution
Moves Forward With Capital Needs Proposal, Sept. 16 Referendum

The Cobb County Board of Education unanimously approved a five-year, $798 million capital improvements plan for schools to be funded by an extension of the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST). The current SPLOST expires on Dec. 31, 2008 and can be extended only with approval by Cobb County voters. The school board approved the plan as part of a resolution calling for a SPLOST III public referendum to be held Sept. 16, 2008. A SPLOST is a one-cent sales tax on all retail goods sold in Cobb County.

“The Board of Education is united in its belief that our public school facilities will always have capital needs, and that the best way to pay for those needs is through a sales tax supported by all consumers,” said Board Chair Betty Gray. “The SPLOST is a common-sense way to repair and improve our facilities without burdening the taxpayers with long-term debt. Through the efficient management of the current and prior SPLOST programs, our school board has proved the effectiveness of this funding mechanism to provide the best possible learning environment for the children of Cobb County.”

The proposal to improve infrastructure and classrooms throughout the District’s 126 facilities would be the third five-year SPLOST program for Cobb County schools.

Registration deadline approaching for would-be voters

If you are not registered to vote, you have until Monday, June 16, to register for the July 15 General Primary/Special Election. You can register at any Cobb County library or when you get or renew your driver’s license. Application forms are available at the Elections Office, government service centers, senior centers or online. If you have moved within Cobb, you must inform the Elections Office as your polling place may have changed. If you move to another county, you must re-register in that county. If you are not sure if you are registered, call the Cobb Elections Office at 770-528-2581 or visit cobbelections.org.

Post 7 Board Member Dr. Teresa Plenge Announces Resignation Due To Health Issues

After more than a decade of service on the Cobb County Board of Education representing Post 7 in southwest Cobb, Dr. Teresa Plenge announced her resignation from the school board effective June 13 due to persistent health issues. Dr. Plenge served at her last board meeting on May 22, 2008.

The 2 teams representing Lovinggood Middle School will be selling Sharpie pens to use during the 6th and 7th grade yearbook signings. They are $1.00 each and there will be a variety of colors choose from. They will be for sale before school and during the signing.

Also, available during the signing will be Cokes, Sprites, Water Bottles, and Lollipops. Each costs $1.00.

Raffle Tickets are still available for $5.00 each. The prize will be a $100 gas gift card! The raffle will be held on Friday, May 23rd---you don't have to be present to win! They will also be available at the yearbook signings.

So bring your money and purchase a raffle ticket, something to write with, a lollipop to savor, and a drink to enjoy! Thank you in advance for supporting our teams!!!

BOOK FAIR REMINDER!

There is still time to purchase you summer reading books at the Lovinggood PTSA Scholastic Book Fair. We received a new shipment Wednesday and now have several books by the authors on the required reading list for each grade level. Don't miss this chance to pick up the required books. For a complete list of books on the list, check our the Lovinggood website.

In addition to these required books, we have many more great books to read over the summer. We received several more books in The Bluford Series that many students requested as well as a few copies of The People of Sparks. We have a great selection of best sellers and award winning books as well as Anime, Manga, sports and reference books. Parents -we even have summer reading books for yourdays at the pool and some great cookbooks with easy recipes for summer. Whatever you enjoy reading, you are sure to find something at the Book Fair. So come on by and stock up for summer.

Get your yearbook before they sell out!

Attention Students & Parents:
Last chance to purchase this year's Lovinggood Legacy.

Yearbooks will be on sale this week each morning from 8:15 - 9:10 outside the Media Center. The cost is $40 each - cash only. Don't miss out, buy early before we sell out.

Autograph supplements will be on sale beginning Thursday at the 8th grade picnic for 8th grade students. These supplements allow for an additional 8 pages of signature space. They will sell for $2.00 each, cash only. They will be available to 6th and 7th grade next week (beginning 5/19) at 8:15.
