PENS program helps provide information and reduce crime

Through an innovative program called Police Email Notification System, or PENS, many Cobb residents and business owners have worked with the police department to better their communities and prevent crime. More than two years ago, the east Cobb precinct was suffering a large number of car break-ins and a pilot email distribution list was developed to provide crime trends, crime prevention tips and current information. With the success and popularity of the program, it was expanded and established in all 5 Cobb police precincts. Each has its own Web site containing information specific to the area.

The program focuses on informing and educating residents of actual crimes occurring and prevention techniques. For example, once the community began receiving information about possessions being stolen from unlocked cars and advice to remove valuables and lock doors, there was a 23 percent reduction in reported incidents. PENS also helps people communicate openly with police. Residents have helped police solve crimes and locate wanted individuals.

Residents and business owners are encouraged to participate in PENS. In March, Senate Bill 26 passed and protects email addresses of PENS members from any Open Records requests by outside organizations wishing to obtain email distribution lists for purposes other than public safety. People signing up to participate in PENS will only receive information that pertains to public safety and awareness.

To sign-up for PENS Bulletins and Alerts, visit cobbcounty.org/police, click on the link for Police Email Notification System and click "sign up for PENS Alerts."

Lovinggood on the Lawn
A HUGE success!
FCA would like to thank everyone involved in making Lovinggood on the Lawn a huge success.  The phrase “many hands make light work” was truly lived out from the beginning of the evening.  We had more volunteers than we could count and everyone was willing to take on any task, no matter how great or small.

People had a wonderful time fellowshipping with one another and enjoying the festivities.  Mrs. Perkins was a great sport climbing into the dunk tank, as was Mr. Robinson and many of our FCA leaders.  G od’s Warriors were outstanding as usual.  Our speaker, Kevin Queen, brought a powerful message and a challenge to our guests.

The most amazing part of the evening was when we received the weather report and learned strong winds and hail were in route to our school.  Everyone chipped in and the entire field was dismantled, packed up, loaded and clean in 15 minutes.  The FCA staff cannot thank the families of Lovinggood enough for rising to the call for assistance.  While we missed out on the movie, Lovinggood on the Lawn was still a huge success.  We’ll just have to save “The Climb” for next year.

Thank you to everyone who came and helped make it a fun filled evening and may God bless you.

Lovinggood PTSA eNews!

Swine Flu Information from Cobb County

Below, is information on the Swine Flu provided by Cobb County.  The information is being provided in Spanish as well.

See Below English for Spanish information on swine flu

Swine Influenza

By Alianzas, a program of University of Missouri Extension and

the University of Missouri - Kansas City Institute for Human Development.

What is swine flu?
Swine Influenza (swine flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs, but swine flu viruses have been reported to spread from person-to-person. Some U.S. states have reported cases of swine flu infection in humans and cases have been reported internationally as well.

Swine flu in humans can vary in severity from mild to severe. However, swine flu infection can be serious.

What are the signs and symptoms of swine flu in people?
The symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. It might include diarrhea and vomiting.

In children, emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:

  • Fast breathing or trouble breathing
  • Bluish skin color
  • Not drinking enough fluids
  • Not waking up or not interacting
  • Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
  • Fever with a rash

In adults, emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:

  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
  • Sudden dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Severe or persistent vomiting

How does swine flu spread?
There are two ways:

·  From infected pigs or surfaces that are contaminated with these germs.

·  From person to person, through coughing or sneezing of people with influenza.

Are there medicines to treat swine flu?
Yes. CDC recommends the use of antiviral drugs that are prescription medicines. For treatment, antiviral drugs work best if started soon after getting sick (within 2 days of symptoms).

If you are sick, limit your contact with other people as much as possible

What can I do to protect myself from getting sick?
There is no vaccine available right now to protect against swine flu. Take these everyday steps to protect your health:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

Can I get swine influenza from eating or preparing pork?
No. Swine influenza viruses are not spread by food. Eating properly handled and cooked pork products is safe.
(Cook to at least 160 degrees F or at least 72 degrees C internal temperature.)
